TWO Category 4 incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported to the ReCP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) during the week of July 30 to August 5. In one of the incidents a tug boat was targeted at PT Darma Sentosa Marindo Yard, Batam Island, Indonesia.
While at berth, four thieves from a boat boarded the tugboat, broke into the storeroom and stole some of the ship's property. The incident was discovered when the second officer was making routine rounds and noticed footprints on the deck. The ship's alarm was then raised.
The other incident involved a general cargo ship at Lotus port, Phu My Bridge, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. This incident also occurred while the ship was at berth. As category 4 incidents, the perpetrators were not armed, and the crew were not harmed.
During the incident against the general cargo ship, the perpetrators in two small boats, wearing masks and caps, boarded the ship and stole two sets of breathing apparatus, two spare air tanks for breathing apparatus and two sets of chemical suits. They escaped when the officer on watch discovered them at the forecastle of the ship.
