Turkish-Built Ferries Stir Debate in Scotland: Local Suppliers Criticized for Limited InvolvementTurkey's renowned Cemre Shipyard, located in Yalova, is constructing four new ferries for Scotland's Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). However, only 2% of the equipment used in this project is being sourced from Scottish suppliers, a decision that has sparked criticism in Scotland. Opposition parties in Scotland have criticized the lack of local supplier involvement, arguing that Scotland's rich shipbuilding heritage has not been adequately utilized. Notably, only stabilizer fins from Kongsberg Maritime’s Dunfermline facility in Scotland are being used, while the remaining 58 suppliers are located across other parts of the UK and abroad. Cemre Shipyard, which has previously exported ships to countries like Sweden and Norway, is recognized internationally as a leading shipyard. The ferries being constructed for CMAL will serve between Scotland’s Islay and Jura islands, aiming to increase passenger and vehicle capacity by 40%. Additionally, the ferries’ diesel/hybrid propulsion system is expected to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Scottish Transport Minister Kevin Stewart defended the decision, stating that the tender was conducted in line with international standards and that Cemre Shipyard offered the best value in terms of quality and price. However, opposition parties in Scotland argue that the lack of involvement of local businesses highlights a missed opportunity to support Scotland’s shipbuilding sector. The ferries being built by Cemre Shipyard showcase Turkey's expertise in the global shipbuilding industry. However, the limited participation of Scottish suppliers has sparked ongoing debates about supporting local industries and maximizing their potential in large-scale projects.
