WHILE the number of containers lost at sea varies each year, often driven by severe weather conditions, the issue remains persistent, with London freight insurer tt Club supporting the container industry's efforts to reduce these losses.
Understanding the factors behind stack collapse and overboard incidents is crucial for mitigating risks, said the TT Club news release.
TT Club commends the World Shipping Council for its annual survey on container losses, noting the 2023 report reflects the lowest recorded loss levels and highlights that 33 per cent of lost containers are eventually recovered.
However, TT Club's analysis of historical data indicates that weather remains the most significant factor.
The findings also underscore the complexity of this issue, involving a range of interconnected operational challenges.
'In this context, TT has been involved from conception with the MARIN[2] TopTier Joint Industry Project,' said TT Club's Peregrine Storrs-Fox.
'This on-going project has drawn together over forty industry and governmental stakeholders in identifying and resolving the circumstances that lead to such incidents. It has already delivered important guidance relating to mitigating parametric roll risks, and the Club will continue to be involved in the debates, particularly at the IMO, following the finalization of the research.'
