THE tanger Med port handled over 10.24 million TEU in 2024, marking an 18.8 per cent year-on-year increase, reports Agence Marocaine de Presse.
The Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA) said the exceptional performance was due to the commitment of port operators and shipping lines, as well as the high productivity levels achieved by all teams.
It was also driven by the strengthening of certain facilities, the commissioning of new equipment, and the optimisation of ports of call, which helped reduce waiting time.
In terms of roll-on/roll-off activity, Tanger Med handled 516,842 trucks in 2024, up 8.1 per cent compared to 2023. TMPA explained that this traffic was mainly driven by industrial products, which grew by 6.8 per cent and agri-food products, which rose 7.2 per cent.
Some 3,047,387 passengers passed through the port in 2024, a 13 per cent increase compared to 2023.
Additionally, the two vehicle terminals of the port complex handled a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024, representing a four per cent increase compared to the previous year.
This traffic includes 368,843 export vehicles produced by the Renault factories in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, 170,519 vehicles exported by the Stellantis factory in Kenitra, 34,100 transshipment vehicles, and 27,410 imported vehicles.
Dry bulk traffic, for its part, stagnated with a slight growth of one per cent over the previous year, totalling 584,945 tons handled, while the volume of hydrocarbons reached 7,640,524 tons, registering a drop of 22 per cent compared with 2023.
TMPA pointed out that this decrease is mainly due to the transfer of part of the imports to the newly commissioned storage facilities in other Moroccan ports.
Furthermore, the Tanger Med complex handled 142 million tonnes of goods in 2024, up 16.2 per cent on 2023.
The statement also notes that 17,479 ports of call were recorded in 2024, up 3.42 per cent on 2023, adding that these included 1,217 mega-ships (over 290 metres in size), up 13.74 per cent on the previous year.
