SWISSPORT's warehouse operation in Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has earned it a Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) certification for pharmaceutical logistics from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
With this certification, the company has become the first globally operating air cargo handler to receive the CEIV Pharma certification for a facility in Africa, reported Mumbai's Logistics Update Africa.
'The certification by IATA reflects our strategic commitment to superior air cargo handling,' said Swissport Kenya CEO Jeroen de Clercq.
'The CEIV Pharma standard guarantees air freight customers the highest quality for the transport of sensitive pharmaceutical products.'
Since the initial opening of the Nairobi Logistics Centre in 2010, Swissport has continuously expanded its on-site offering and is now further investing in a state-of-the-art temperature-controlled area with 208 rack positions and a capacity of 250 tonnes of pharmaceutical shipments.
Swissport now offers clients an end-to-end cool chain from the delivery of shipments to the warehouse until the cargo is loaded into the aircraft.
The temperature-controlled area occupies 13 per cent of the total warehouse space of 10,400 square metres. The dedicated pharma rooms have temperature ranges of +15 to +25 Celsius as well as +2 to +8 degrees Celsius. Additionally, there is a special cooling unit for goods which require a temperature range of minus 10 to -20 degrees Celsius.
With annual growth of 10 per cent and a turnover of 57,000 tonnes in 2019, JKIA is an important cargo location in the company's global network of 115 warehouses. With the official opening of the new cool facilities on February 21, Swissport has added the ninth location to its growing network of pharma centres.
