CONTAINER cargo processed at south Korean seaports increased 6.4 per cent in the second quarter, driven by stronger shipments to the United States and China, reports Yonhap.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries reported that the container cargo handled nationwide reached 8.1 million TEU from April to June, up from 7.61 million TEU in the same period the previous year.
The volume of container cargo for exports and imports rose 4.3 per cent to 4.55 million TEU, fuelled by a surge in trade with the US and China, which saw volumes increase 15.5 per cent and 7.8 per cent, respectively.
Non-container cargo processed at the ports also experienced a slight increase, edging up 0.5 per cent year-on-year to 250.7 million tons in the second quarter.
'The volume of container cargo handled gained ground in the second quarter due to increased exports to major partners, including China and the United States,' said Oceans minister Kang Do-hyung.
'But amid uncertainties, including the reshuffling global supply chain and high shipping costs, it is hard to predict continued growth for the second half.'
