SHANNON airport on the west coast of Ireland has applied for planning permission to develop a large air cargo hub and distribution facility at shannon Airport as part of its growth strategy, reports Dublin's Irish Independent.
The airport applied to develop the 29,116-square foot distribution centre and an additional 3,606-square foot of office space.
The decision to apply for planning permission followed reports last March that Shannon Group was seeking to procure a design team to develop the air cargo distribution facility.
'The upgrade of our cargo facilities is part of our overall plans to enhance the facilities Shannon has to offer to cargo operators using the airport,' said the company.
The facility formed part of its development strategy which has seen it invest over EUR150 million (US$170 million) across its campus to provide solutions for Irish and foreign firms since its establishment in 2014.
Reports in the Irish Independent last year said Shannon Group had been in talks with Amazon about the possibility of it establishing a facility or other infrastructure at the airport.
However, Shannon Group did not respond to questions on any reported negotiations with Amazon or other companies.
