THE urgent need for the government to expedite the formulation of policies and a comprehensive framework to propel the advancement of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) was emphasized by an airline executive, reports Manila's BusinessWorld.
'The integration of sustainable aviation fuel is crucial in meeting the aviation industry's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint,' said Cebu Pacific chief strategy officer Alex Reyes.
This push aligns with the aviation sector's goal to reduce carbon emissions by embracing eco-friendly fuel alternatives.
In November, the Board of Investments disclosed ongoing discussions with aerospace giant Airbus regarding the development of SAF in the Philippines.
The recently introduced Airbus all-new engine (NEO) aircraft boasts enhanced fuel efficiency, representing the latest generation of Airbus planes well-suited for SAF utilization.
All Airbus aircraft are certified to operate with a blend of up to 50 per cent SAF.
In September, the Department of Energy announced its efforts to draft regulations on SAF, aiming to accelerate its adoption throughout the country.
'The Philippine government's support to enhance the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel is a welcome development and aligns with Cebu Pacific's goal of driving sustainable aviation in the country,' said Mr Reyes.
The International Air Transport Association has projected that SAF will contribute 65 per cent of carbon emissions reduction.
'We encourage more producers and stakeholders to join in these efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050,' said Mr Reyes.
