HOUTHI attacks from Yemen on commercial vessels in the red Sea resulted in a 90 per cent decline in container shipping through the area between December and February, reports The Manila Times.
These attacks affected at least 65 countries and forced 29 primary energy and shipping companies to alter their routes.
The alternative routes around Africa added 11,000 nautical miles to each journey, increasing fuel costs by US$1 million per voyage.
In response to the attacks, the US and Britain have conducted repeated air strikes on the Yemen-based Houthis, aiming to curtail their ability to target ships, block revenue sources, and impose financial sanctions.
Despite these efforts, the Houthi attacks have continued, exacerbating the economic fallout.
The Houthis began these attacks in 2023 to pressure Israel and its allies over the war in the Gaza Strip.
Recently, on June 12, a commodities carrier named Tutor suffered severe flooding in its engine room following a successful attack by a seaborne drone.
A small cargo ship caught fire on June 13 after being hit by two projectiles.
