THE Port of Barcelona reported record container volumes in the first half of the year as the port bounced back from Covid lockdowns a year earlier.
Damia Calvet, who has just taken over as chairman of the Barcelona Port Authority, Damia Calvet, who succeeded Merce Conesa, announced that total freight traffic between January and June totalled 32.7 million tonnes, a 16.8 per cent increase from pandemic-depressed movements a year earlier.
Container traffic was especially strong at 1.8 million TEU, up 31 per cent year on year, and setting a new record, beating by 4.2 per cent the 1.7 million TEU registered in the first half of 2019.
Transshipment grew by 52.2 per cent, while origin and destination traffic gained 18.1 per cent. Containerised exports grew by 19 per cent and imports by 16 per cent over pre-pandemic 2019 results.
In other traffic categories, new vehicle movements increased by 31.1 per cent over last year, but were 31 per cent below the first half of 2019.
Bulk solids were up by 8.1 per cent, to 2.3 million tonnes. Bulk liquids, by contrast, slipped by 12.4 per cent to 5.6 million tonnes. Imports of natural gas were down by 51 per cent, while transit movements of gasoline dropped 56 per cent, reports Seatrade Maritime News, of Colchester, UK.
