QATAR'S Hamad International Airport's (HIA) cargo volumes increased by 20.71 per cent in 2021 by handling 2.6 million tonnes of cargo during the year which also saw the airline introducing six new cargo destinations.
Aircraft movement at HIA grew by 28.12 per cent in 2021, with 169,909 aircraft taking off and landing, reports London's Air Cargo News.
The airport also witnessed a 41.37 per cent increase in the number of passengers in 2021 compared to 2020, with a total of 17.7 million passengers served.
The airport's performance is also closely related to that of Qatar Airways Cargo, which has been rapidly expanding in the freight sector over recent years.
Air Cargo News earlier reported that American multinational engineering firm AECOM will oversee the design and manage construction for Cargo Terminal 2 and Amiri Flight Facilities at HIA, as part of the Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management's infrastructure expansion programme.
The airport's second stage of expansion include a new cargo terminal.
