Proposed Changes to maritime law Aim to Improve Seafarers’ Well-BeingNew amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) could make internet access for seafarers at sea and enhanced dietary standards a legal requirement by 2025. These proposals, now open for public consultation, aim to improve the living and working conditions of seafarers worldwide. The MLC establishes minimum international standards for seafarers' living and working conditions. Regularly reviewed and updated, the convention ensures its provisions remain relevant. The latest changes proposed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) incorporate lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of enabling seafarers to stay connected with their loved ones through social media and messaging apps while at sea.Another proposed amendment focuses on the health of seafarers, requiring access to a balanced, nutritious, and varied diet. Clarifying the definition of "balanced" and making national dietary guidelines legally binding will ensure meals provided onboard include carbohydrates, protein, fats, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.Additional amendments include measures to better protect seafarers from financial losses and establish clearer accountability for a vessel's financial responsibilities.MCA Head of Seafarer Safety and Health, Oliver Mallinson, emphasized the importance of these updates, stating:"We are committed to safeguarding our seafarers and ensuring their living and working conditions meet high standards. These amendments address the evolving needs of seafarers, helping them stay connected with their families and maintaining their health during time onboard."The consultation on these amendments began on 11 December and will remain open for six weeks, concluding on 22 January. Stakeholders and interested parties are encouraged to review the proposals and share their feedback to help shape the future of maritime law.
