THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) saw big growth in passenger and container traffic in the third quarter of the year, reports Manila Times.
Passengers who passed through the country's ports rose 233.54 per cent to 15.71 million from July to September, up from 4.71 million passengers in the same period last year.
Container traffic increased 9.7 per cent to 2.03 million TEU in the third quarter from 1.85 million TEU in the same period last year.
Domestic boxes handled at the ports were up 9.47 per cent to 759,884 TEU from 694,142 TEU, while foreign boxes saw an increase of 10.4 per cent to 1.27 million TEU.
Import volume increased 10.75 per cent to 650,106 TEU, while export boxes increased 10.08 per cent to 629,381 TEU.
Ship calls went up 29.9 per cent to 119,977 in the third quarter from 92,359 in the same period last year.
Domestic ship calls stood at 116,940 during the period, while foreign ship calls were at 3,047.
ppa general manager Jay Daniel Santiago declared the agency will further improve the country's ports in both services and infrastructure.
