CONGESTION and reduced throughput capacity at South Africa's ports are poised to generate robust demand for both inbound and outbound air freight during the initial quarter of 2024, reports Johannesburg's Freight News.
Despite challenges such as escalating airline rates and capacity constraints at OR Tambo International Airport, Aero Africa CCO Jade da Costa asserts that their neutral wholesale position positions them effectively to meet and manage the heightened demand for cargo services.
'We're in a good place and can do a lot more shipments. Because of the volumes we are handling, we're also in a good position to negotiate with the airlines,' he said.
Mr Da Costa also said carriers realise the benefit of having a long-term cargo operator interested in sustaining air freight capacity through block space allocation (BSA).
And although BSA agreements attach financial risk, securing continued cargo movement on behalf of their clients is worth it, he said.
'We want to take as much capacity as possible and are prepared to take hard allocations per routing, whether it's daily or weekly,' said Mr Da Costa.
