JAPAN'S port of Tokyo handled 4.6 million TEU in the first six months of the year, after both import and export volumes declined compared to the same period in 2018, according to data from the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The port's containerised export freight volumes in the first half of 2019 stood at 5.92 million tonnes, representing a 5.7 per cent year-on-year decrease.
The top five destination countries by cargo weight were China, the US, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, reported American Shipper.
China imported 1.54 million tonnes of cargo from Tokyo in the first half of this year, down 11 per cent on the same period last year. Chinese destination cargo accounted for 26 per cent of all containerised freight by weight out of Tokyo over the reporting period.
Exports from Tokyo bound for the US rose by 12 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes of containerised freight, equivalent to 25.4 per cent of Tokyo's boxed export cargo throughput.
Number three on the export list is Thailand. Cargo volumes out of Tokyo and into Thailand were down by 16 per cent to stand at 412,800 tonnes.
Cargo out of Tokyo and into Vietnam was up 4.8 per cent in the first half of this year to reach 317,700 tonnes.
Taiwan received the fifth-largest amount of sea cargo from Tokyo, some 274,700 tonnes in the first six months of 2019, representing a year-on-year decrease of 14.8 per cent.
Tokyo's main international export volumes are industrial machinery (900,000 tonnes), various reused materials (886,000 tonnes), chemical products (883,000 tonnes), and auto parts (777,500). Machinery and reused materials were down by eight per cent and 18 per cent, respectively, chemical volumes were flat, and exports of auto parts were up by 5.2 per cent.
At 16.97 million tonnes, import volumes by weight into Tokyo are three times greater than the weight of exports out of the port. Import volumes into the port were down by only 0.8 per cent in the first six months of the year. Again, the top five trading partners are China, the US, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.
Containerised imports from China into Tokyo stood at 7.27 million tonnes, down 1.1 per cent year on year. Chinese imports accounted for 42.8 per cent of the weight of all cargo into Tokyo in the first six months of the year.
The weight of boxed imports into Tokyo from the US fell by 6.2 per cent year on year to stand at two million tonnes in the first half of 2019.
Thailand's cargo volumes into Tokyo also declined by 2.7 per cent to stand at 1.15 million tonnes.
Vietnam took the fourth spot with 1.05 million tonnes imported into Tokyo, after Vietnam's cargo volumes into Tokyo increased by 13.6 per cent. It has been widely reported that manufacturers and shippers were starting to shift some of their operations and supply chains out of China and into Vietnam to avoid higher US tariffs.
There was also a significant 13.5 per cent rise in containerised cargo imported into Tokyo from Taiwan to stand at 791,730 tonnes.

Imports of containerised electrical appliances into Tokyo stood at 1.6 million tonnes, up 5.2 per cent in the first half of this year.
The total number of oceangoing ship calls at the port of Tokyo in the first half of the year was 11,749, which was 296 less than in the first half of 2018. There were 2,353 ports calls by full containerships between January and June, 126 less than in the first half of 2018.
