MALAYSIA's Port Klang registered a growth of 10.7 per cent year on year for January to November 2019 in container handling with a total of 12.32 million TEU.
The Port Klang Authority (PKA) said in a statement that in terms of import container throughput, Port Klang handled 2.31 million TEU, up 5.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2018.
Meanwhile, export throughput rose 5.6 per cent in the eleven-month period to 2.26 million TEU, and in terms of transshipment, Port Klang handled 7.8 million TEU, a y-o-y growth of 13.9 per cent.
PKA said Port Klang is expected to handle 13.5 million TEU this year and is likely to retain its position in the World Container Ports ranking at number 12. It attributed the growth to both indigenous and transshipment volume, reports The Edge Markets, Malaysia.
'In 2016, the port registered a decline of 10 per cent due to the reconsolidation of shipping lines but in 2017 grew by 2.8 per cent as a result of renewed confidence from shipping lines and substantial growth of local cargo.
'This year, through the efforts of the private terminal operators together with PKA and the strong support of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia in proactive policies and high level marketing, Port Klang has seen a strong positive growth for 2019,' it said.
The authority also said the Transport Ministry is collaborating with the Works Ministry and the Public Works Department (JKR) to undertake long-term plans to improve the safety and carrying capacity of roads around Port Klang.
'PKA and Westports [Holdings Bhd] jointly carried out maintenance works on PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) service road which is heavily utilised by import traffic exiting from Westport gates.
'JKR is upgrading the Pulau Indah Highway which is expected to be completed in April 2021.
'Upgrading works are also ongoing at Jalan Pelabuhan Utara involving the construction of additional lanes and bridge replacement and are scheduled to be completed at the end of 2020,' it said.
On future expansion plans, PKA said Port Klang is also actively focusing on increasing its port capacity to meet future demands. Westports phase II expansion plan will add an additional capacity of 13 million TEU and is expected to commence in 2020 and will be fully completed in 2045.
At the same time, PKA said it is undertaking a feasibility study to develop a third port terminal at Port Klang in Pulau Carey in preparation for increased demands for port facilities in the future.
It said both these expansion projects will be based on green technology for construction and operations, environmentally friendly practices and terminal automation to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
'These initiatives are expected to raise Port Klang's competitiveness and will provide confidence to international shipping lines and logistics players,' it said.
Meanwhile, PKA said cargo movement at the PKFZ rose 44 per cent year on year with 303,020 TEU. It said the occupancy rate at PKFZ as of October 31, 2019 was at 97.8 per cent for the open land and 80.7 per cent for the light industrial units.
