PACIFIC International Lines (PIL) is commencing at the end of April a direct container shipping service from the US west coast port of Oakland to Vietnam, deploying ships that can carry up to 11,900 TEU. Branded 'AC5', PIL jointly operates the loop with Cosco and Wan Hai Lines.
The port rotation for the AC5 service is: Haiphong, Guangzhou-Nansha, Hong Kong, Shenzen-Yantian, Long Beach, Oakland, Shenzen-Yantian and back to Haiphong.
The development comes as exports to Vietnam through Oakland grew by 126 per cent between 2015 and 2018, while Oakland's imports from Vietnam rose 29 per cent over the same period, making Vietnam the port's third largest import market and fifth largest export market, reported American Shipper.
'PIL's new direct service from the port of Oakland is a good sign of increasing demand on Vietnam routes,' said Oakland maritime director John Driscoll. 'Vietnam is showing strong growth in its import and export markets.'
