IN 2023, international air freight forwarders managed 302.140 million kilogrammes of cargo, marking a 17 per cent decrease from the previous year, reports Manila's PortCalls Asia.
Nippon Express philippines led the pack, lifting 44.78 million kilogrammes, constituting 14.82 per cent of the total cargo handled.
Various shipment methods, including direct shipments, consolidations, and breakbulking, all experienced declines throughout the year. Conversely, domestic air freight forwarders saw a 15.8 per cent increase in cargo handling, reaching 56.914 million kilogrammes.
According to preliminary data from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), international air freight forwarders in the Philippines collectively handled 17 per cent less cargo in 2023 compared to 2022.
The data also revealed a slight decrease in the submission of complete data by accredited international air freight forwarders.
Consolidations, which made up 43.29 per cent of the total cargo, decreased 18 per cent to 130.806 million kilogrammes.
Breakbulking, accounting for 39 per cent of the total, also experienced a 16 per cent decline to 118.091 million kilogrammes.
Direct shipments saw a 16.7 per cent decrease to 53.243 million kilogrammes.
Nippon Express Philippines Corp maintained its position as the top international air freight forwarder, handling 14.82 per cent of the cargo in 2023, equivalent to 44.78 million kilogrammes.
Federal Express Pacific, Inc secured the second spot, handling 7.12 per cent or 21.515 million kilogrammes.
U-Freight Phils, Inc climbed to third place, handling 17.849 million kilogrammes, while Schenker Philippines, Inc. dropped to fourth place with 16.948 million kilogrammes. Kintetsu World Express (Phils.), Inc and DSV Air & Sea, Inc also switched positions, securing fifth and sixth places, respectively.
Yusen Logistics Philippines moved up to seventh place, followed by Kuehne + Nagel in eighth place.
DHL Global Forwarding (Phils.) and DHL Express (Phils) Corp rounded up the top ten, with DHL Global Forwarding ranking higher than the previous year and DHL Express dropping three places.
