FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM is the latest of the new Ocean Three alliance partners to make Croatia's Port of Rijeka its first Adriatic port of call, adding to deals made with China Shipping (CSCL) and the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).
Under the name Ocean Three, the service covers the Asia-Europe, Asia-Mediterranean, transpacific and Asia's east coast trades through a combination of vessel-sharing, slot-exchange and slot-charter agreements.
Manila's International Container Terminals Inc (ICTSI) runs the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal Rijeka for PHOEX service. This Asia-Mediterranean route has four weekly services, two to the Med, one to the Black Sea and one to the Adriatic.
This means that the transit time for a container from Shanghai to Rijeka will be 29 days, 26 days from Busan, 24 from Ningbo, 21 from Shenzhed-Chiwan and 16 days from Port Kelang, said ICTSI.
"The Asia-Europe trade route will have four weekly services, which complements two existing services, thereby offering a total of six departures a week," said the ICTSI release.
But regional competition is heating up with Slovenia's Port of Koper promoting itself as the port that can accommodate 10,000 TEUers with plans to spend EUR240 million (US$311 million) on upgrades in coming years.
The port has been dredged to 14 metres and work will be begin on deepening it another metre starting next year, said Luka Koper port operator Dragomir Matic.
