THE Port of Oakland saw its busiest month ever for container imports when it handled 90,598 TEU in July, representing year-on-year growth of 7.5 per cent.

'This is the fourth-time import volume has increased in the past five months,' pointed out Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll. 'This demonstrates the continued strength of the US economy and consumer purchasing power.'

Export volume rose 10.2 per cent in July compared to the same month a year earlier, and marked the fifth-straight month of year-on-year gains in export volume, reported the American Journal of Transportation.

In response to signs from the Trump Administration that it may impose new tariffs on Chinese imports, starting in September, the port declined to forecast how new levies might affect Oakland's trade volume. August-October are traditionally the months when US importers stock up for holiday sales. The port cautioned that the trade conflict makes estimating future cargo volume difficult.
