NY/NJ November TEU new high but looses out on market share
THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey handled a total of 527,974 TEU in November, beating its previous record a year ago with a 5.5 per cent increase.
Loaded import containers rose 9.1 per cent to 271,755 TEU while loaded export containers fell 1.8 per cent to 114,884 TEU.
Empty import containers rose 46.7 per cent to 2,333 TEU while empty export containers rose 4.6 per cent to 139,002 TEU.
However, the port authority's share on the North American container market dropped to 14.8 per cent for the first 11 months of 2016, down from a 15.8 per cent share for the same period in 2015, according to figures from the American Association of Port Authorities.
In the Northeast, the port was still dominant with a 50.4 per cent market share for the first 11 months of the year, down from 51.9 per cent for the same 11-month period. For North American East Coast ports as a whole, the port held a 29.3 per cent market share, down slightly from a 29.5 per cent share for the corresponding 2015 period, American Shipper reported.
Overall, for the first 11 months of the year, the port handled 5.73 million TEU, 2.5 per cent less than the same period last year.
The port's intermodal rail terminals handled 43,556 containers in November while for the first 11 months of the year, volumes reached 498,021 containers, year-over-year increases of 5.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively.
In addition, the port handled 37,997 automobiles in November, 14 per cent fewer than in November 2015. However, for the first 11 months of the year, auto volumes drove upwards 4.5 per cent year-over-year to 452,321 units.
