NIGERIAN airport ground handlers were to strike on the weekend over the reversal of increase in cargo charges passed by the House of Representatives, reports the Lagos Sun.
The Aviation Ground Handling Association of Nigeria (AGHAN) said it is already putting systems in place to strike to enforce the commencement of the new price regime as approved by the nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NC) two months ago.
The NC had approved an increase in safety threshold handling rates after 36 years with commencement dates slated for October 1, 2021 (for international operators) and January 1, 2022 (for local operators) but the House Committee on Aviation directed it to stop the implementation till further notice.
With the new rates, the handlers could charge between US$1,500 and $5,000 (passenger and cargo flights) for narrow and wide body aircraft on international routes, respectively, while for domestic operators it was upped to NGN20,000 ($50) and NGN70,000, depending on the aircraft type.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NC had in August approved new safety threshold handling rates for the ground handling companies, the first time in 36 years.
The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, however, directed NC to stop implementation of the new rates which was to commence on October 1 for international and January 1 for local operators.
