NaturaLINE™, the World’s First Natural Refrigerant Container System, Now Available from Carrier TransicoldHAMBURG, Germany, Oct. 8, 2013 – Launching a new age of environmentally
sustainable refrigeration for the marine shipping industry, Carrier
Transicold today announced that its innovative NaturaLINE™ container
unit is now available commercially. Carrier Transicold helps improve
global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line
of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a
part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United
Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The NaturaLINE unit is the world’s first and only container refrigeration system to use the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (CO2), with a global warming potential (GWP) of one, rather than a synthetic refrigerant with a significantly higher GWP. Carrier showcased a production model at Intermodal Europe 2013 held in Hamburg, Germany, this week.
“Throughout all of its sea trials, NaturaLINE demonstrated itself to be an outstanding performer,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold. “In terms of power consumption, NaturaLINE compares closely to Carrier Transicold’s PrimeLINE® unit, the current industry leader. And, through the use of CO2 as a refrigerant, it makes history with the best environmental profile of any container refrigeration unit in terms of lifetime carbon emissions.”
The GWP of CO2 is 1,400 to 3,900 times lower than that of synthetic refrigerants used in refrigerated containers today. In addition to helping address the shipping industry’s environmental concerns, CO2 is non-flammable, cost effective and available worldwide.
“The unique properties of CO2 as a refrigerant creates special challenges when it comes to energy consumption,” said Kartik Kumar, director, Marketing & Strategic Planning, Global Container Refrigeration, Carrier Transicold. “The NaturaLINE system handles the necessary gas phase and pressure changes and does so energy efficiently, achieving a tremendous environmental profile. As a result, lifetime carbon emissions are reduced by as much as a 35 percent compared to previous units using synthetic refrigerant.”
The NaturaLINE unit delivers among the industry’s best pulldown capacities at high ambient temperatures typical of tropical environments. Additionally, the NaturaLINE unit matches Carrier Transicold’s PrimeLINE unit when it comes to deep frozen capacity – 4,400 watts (15,000 Btu/h) at box temperature of -29 degrees Celsius (-20 degrees Fahrenheit) and ambient of 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit).
To achieve its refrigeration performance and outstanding efficiencies, the NaturaLINE unit features a number of design innovations, including: an exclusive multi-stage compressor that maximizes capacity while minimizing power consumption; a custom-designed variable-speed drive that electronically adjusts compressor speed to provide the precise amount of cooling capacity when needed; a compact and lightweight gas cooler coil that wraps around the condenser fan to maximize heat-transfer surface area for greater efficiency; a flash tank that manages the flow and phase change of the refrigerant after leaving the gas cooler; and two-speed fans that offer greater versatility and energy-saving performance.
The NaturaLINE unit uses environmentally sustainable zero-GWP polyurethane insulating foam. For long-life and corrosion resistance, the gas cooler takes advantage of Carrier’s patented e-coat technology, and the compressor, flash tank and filter drier have aluminized coatings.
Like other units in the Carrier Transicold container refrigeration family, the NaturaLINE unit features the Micro-Link® 3 controller with backlit LCD display and DataCorder™ electronic data recorder.
The NaturaLINE unit has been validated by UL Environment as having a 95 percent recyclability rate, joining Carrier’s PrimeLINE unit as the only container refrigeration units to achieve recyclability validation.
