MSC surpasses 2 Million TEU orderbook with New megamax OrdersMediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping line, has taken its orderbook beyond the 2 million teu mark, according to Alphaliner. This milestone follows a significant order for ten 24,000 TEU megamax vessels from hengli Heavy Industry, formerly STX Dalian, in a deal valued at approximately $2.35 billion.Earlier this year, msc signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Hengli Heavy, establishing the shipyard as a key partner for shipbuilding, engine production, repair, and conversion work. This partnership has already yielded notable results, including a September order for 10 LNG dual-fuel 21,000 TEU ships. The newly ordered 24,000 TEU vessels are set to be delivered starting in 2028. Once confirmed, this order will elevate MSC’s orderbook to 2.13 million TEU, surpassing the existing fleet capacity of Ocean Network Express (ONE), the world’s sixth-largest container line.Beyond newbuilds, MSC has been aggressively expanding its fleet through secondhand acquisitions. Since August 2020, the line has purchased over 400 secondhand ships, further consolidating its position as a market leader.Currently, MSC holds a global market share exceeding 20%, cementing its dominance in the liner shipping industry, according to Singapore's Splash 147.
