THE 23,964-TEU msc Diletta lifted a record 23,773 TEU at the Port of Felixstowe, the most containers ever handled from a single ship in the EU, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
Built in 2021, the vessel is part of MSC's new ultra-large class of containerships with a total rated capacity of 23,964 TEU. The MSC Diletta is 1,211 feet long with a 200-foot beam.
'The size of container ships has been increasing for many years and with growing demand for services into the Port of Felixstowe we are seeing ever greater container exchanges,' said Port of Felixstowe operations chief Robert Ashton.
'We are also seeing a trend to consolidate cargo on fewer ultra-large ships,' he said.
The MSC Diletta operates on the 2M Alliance Griffin/AE55 Far East Asia to North Europe service.
In mid-December, the group planned to consolidate sailings on this and another route to address the long wait times that vessels had been experiencing at the major ports.
Starting in 2022, 2M dropped calls at Rotterdam from this route and increase the port time in Felixstowe to handle an increased number of boxes.
