After the accident, which happened to the container ship MOL Comfort and cracking of her hull on two parts, the maritime administration of UAE reported the the two parts of the ship are still sailing in the ocean.
After the hull cracked fire started on board and first was announced that the ship sank, but later the local authorities reported that the parts of the vessel are still over the water. Two patrol boats were sent to inspect the parts and to check and possibilities to tugging them and the ecology environment in the region.
The fore and aft parts of MOL Comfort were shotted by a photography of the patrol boats. According to the information from MOL there is several options to save the cargo on board and to tow it back into UAE port Jebel Ali. The parts are drifting with about 2 knots in an east-northeast direction, as they are located close to one of the heaviest routes for maritime transport.
We remind that on 17th June 2013 the container ship MOL Comfort broke on two part after the heavy waves and strong wind. The accident happened on 200 nautical miles off the Yemen’s coast during a tropical storm with 6 meters waves. All the crew members left the vessel accordingly and were saved by nearby ship Yantian Express.
According to the preliminary information after the hull cracked on two parts, the quickly sank, but there were no evidences due to the bad weather. However, after the end of the storm the nearby ships and the partol boats ensured that fore and aft parts of container ship MOL Comfort are still afloat. The company Mitsui Osk Lines consider towing of the hull with the cargo on it.
