MILWAUKEE Mitchell International Airport (MKE) has begun construction on a state-of-the-art air cargo terminal, aiming to attract business away from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, reports New York's FreightWaves.
The project, developed in partnership with a private firm, was marked by a recent groundbreaking ceremony.
The redevelopment will transform a former US Air Force Reserve base into a 337,000-square-foot cargo facility, featuring parking for up to five Boeing 747-400 freighters and upgraded taxiways to accommodate widebody aircraft.
Local officials believe the new facility will provide Wisconsin businesses with a more cost-effective and efficient alternative to shipping goods via O'Hare, which is often congested and has high user fees.
However, the project's success will ultimately depend on securing cargo airlines to operate from the new terminal.
'When this project is complete, builders and suppliers will be able to transport their raw materials and finished products in and out of Wisconsin more quickly and efficiently,' said airport director Brian Dranzik.
