MEXICAN ports moved a total of 6.46 million TEU between January and October this year, which represents an increase of 21.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2020, according to figures from the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.
On the Pacific coast, container movements reached 4.52 million TEU, up 23.4 per cent compared to 3.66 million TEU from January to October 2020.
Manzanillo handled a total of 2.79 million TEU (+16.8 per cent), followed by Lazaro Cardenas with 1.32 million TEU (+51.2 per cent). Ensenada operated 320,637 TEU (+1.3 per cent); Mazatlan 35,490 TEU (+4 per cent) and Chiapas 34,418 TEU (-3.3 per cent).
According to the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM), the Gulf of Mexico ports reached 1.93 million TEU, an increase of 18.3 per cent more than in the accumulated to October of the previous year, when 1.64 million TEU were registered.
Veracruz handled 978,071 TEU (+19.9 per cent), followed by Altamira with 751,414 TEU (+19.1 per cent) and Progreso registered 131,819 TEU (+8.5 per cent).
Of the total containers handled in Mexico's National Port System, imports reached 3.27 million TEU, up 23.8 per cent from 2.64m TEU the year before, while exports totalled 3.18 million TEU, up 19.8 per cent from 2.65 million TEU from January to October 2020.
