THE Port of Melbourne saw container throughput rise 4.1 per cent year on year in June to reach 241,985 TEU. Yet, box traffic declined 2.4 per cent when compared to the previous month of May.
The month-on-month decrease in container volume was attributed to a decline in the Bass Island trade (down 3,121 TEU) and empties shrank by 3,622 TEU. The mainland coastal trade fell by just 235 TEU, reported Riga's TransportWeekly.
The port's overseas container trade increased by 952 TEU to 159,327 TEU, of which full imports totalled 99,688 TEU, and full exports accounted for 59,639 TEU.
Trade with the Apple Isle totalled 18,335 TEU of full containers, of which 8,463 TEU were imports across Bass Strait, and 9,872 TEU were exports. The mainland coastal trade amounted to 6,412 TEU of full containers, with exports making up 5,747 TEU and imports, 665 TEU.
The leading containerised commodity at the port is miscellaneous manufacturing, followed by furniture and then electrical equipment.
In June, the port handled 34,525 motor vehicles, which came to 587,288 revenue tonnes, plus 82,544 tonnes of break bulk, 616,731 tonnes of liquid bulk, and 294,79 tonnes of dry bulk.
