THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has mandated that domestic shipping lines reserve a minimum of 25 per cent of their cargo capacity for transporting agricultural produce at a discounted rate, reports the manila Bulletin.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said this directive, aligned with existing legislation, aims to reduce wastage, enhance farmers' income, and fortify food security.
Secretary Tiu Laurel recently convened with officials from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to ensure strict adherence to government regulations by shipping firms in accordance with President Marcos' directive to enhance food production and modernise agriculture.
The discussion between the Department of Agriculture and the PPA was prompted by grievances raised by highland vegetable farmers and traders regarding the transportation of agricultural goods, both over land and sea routes.
