THE United States is currently facing a shortage of maintenance workers within the aviation industry, exacerbated by the retirement of baby boomers and job changes brought about by the Covid crisis, reports Agence France-Presse.
This shortage comes at a time when the global fleet of commercial aircraft is projected to expand by a third by the year 2034, with more than 36,400 aircraft, according to a recent study conducted by consulting firm Oliver Wyman.
In response, spending in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul market is expected to increase by 20 per cent by 2034.
However, the aviation sector is grappling with a significant deficit in qualified manpower and an insufficient pipeline of talent.
There is a shortage of 24,000 aviation maintenance technicians in North America, a number projected to rise to nearly 40,000 by 2028.
Even with renowned institutions like the Aviation High School in Long Island, which boasts cohorts totaling 2,000 students, this gap in the workforce cannot be adequately addressed.
'I don't think the Aviation High Schools have enough capacity to train enough people,' said Aviation High School principal Steven Jackson.
'We are one of the largest high schools and it would be hard to scale it up further.'
