THE Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners, with its first female majority, approved in principle measures thought to be incentives to attract cargo to the port.
One measure is free parking for cargo ships that slow down near the port and plug into shore power or have another kind of pollution-cutting technology, reports American Shipper.
Another measure is providing US$5 per container for each laden container they move through the port on condition that it travel inland by on-dock rail.
"By encouraging the use of shore power or other systems for cutting at-berth ship emissions, and by bringing more cargo via on-dock rail, Long Beach seeks to increase trade and reduce air pollution," said the statement from the port.
"We are in competition with Vancouver, with Prince Rupert, with Lazaro Cardenas, where costs are much lower than San Pedro Bay," said commission president Doug Drummond.
