A RAILFREIGHT workers' strike in Canada could soon be accompanied by work stoppages at certain port facilities in the United States, reports Ohio's Recycling Today.
This situation poses potential challenges for buyers, sellers, and traders of recyclable materials who rely on rail and container shipping, as disruptions in Canada and the US could lead to significant logistical headaches.
'The looming labour strikes at Canadian railways and US east and Gulf Coast ports are set to cause significant disruptions to North American supply chains,' said Container xChange.
'The strikes are expected to create severe operational challenges for the container logistics industry, leading to increased costs for shippers and cargo owners, delays, and diversions.'
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents workers at Canada's two largest freight rail companies, Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern (CPKC).
Negotiations between the union and the two companies have stalled over key issues in the new contract, including wage increases, rest break regulations, and the potential impact of automation.
