PORT of Los Angeles announced that containerised imports declined 3.3 per cent in October compared to the same month in 2014, following a trend that saw West Coast ports losing some market share last month while East Coast ports gained.
LA port, the largest US container port, also reported a decline in exports of 14.7 per cent, with total container volume, including loaded import and export containers, and empty containers, down 1.55 per cent from October last year, the IHS Media reported.
The drop in containerised imports in Los Angeles follows similar reports earlier from Long Beach, which reported a 0.8 per cent decline in imports, and Oakland, where imports were down 3.3 per cent in October.
In the first ten months of the year, Los Angeles reported that total container volume is down 2.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. The port, like all West Coast facilities, was choked by congestion earlier this year due labour disputes. The ports since late spring have regained much, but not all, of the market share they lost in January and February.
PIERS, which is part of IHS, reported earlier that containerised imports through West Coast ports declined 6 per cent from October 2014. West Coast market share of total US containerised imports fell to 49.7 per cent from 51.41 percent the month before.
Imports through East Coast ports increased 12 per cent year over year, and the East Coast's market share increased to 44.81 per cent from 43.06 per cent the month before. The Gulf Coast's market share dropped to 5.45 per cent from 5.53 percent.
