SOUTHERN California outbound truckload rates are rising above national averages while delays and port congestion generate more truck demand, reports IHS Media.
Dry-van spot rates from Los Angeles and Ontario, California, to Chicago increased drastically in June. Los Angeles-to-Chicago shipper-paid spot rates increased US$0.19 month over month to $2.90 per mile in June.
Los Angeles-to-Dallas shipper rates averaged $3.55 per mile in June, up from $2.73 per mile in February. From Los Angeles to Memphis, shipper rates since February increased $0.16 to $3.45 per mile, and from Los Angeles to Phoenix, the average rate rose $0.41 to $4.86 per mile.
Rate increases from Ontario, California, between February and June were comparable with $0.18 per mile to Chicago, $0.23 to Dallas, $0.15 to Denver, and $0.15 to Phoenix.
The average rate from Ontario to Memphis rose $0.01 to $3.23 per mile. The average rate in that lane was $2.43 per mile in February.
Between February and June, the average Phoenix-to-Dallas spot rate increased $0.51 in June to $3.34 per mile, while the rate to Fort Worth climbed $0.29 to $3.66 per mile.
The average rate from Phoenix to Denver rose $0.28 to $3.90 per mile. The rate from Phoenix back to Ontario jumped $0.32 to $2.27 per mile.
Total laden imports into Los Angeles and Long Beach in May and June combined rose 36 per cent compared with the same two-month period a year earlier, and 17 per cent from the same months in the pre-Covid crisis.
There are hot markets across the US where spot rates are rising steadily due to port volumes that are expected to be strong through the rest of 2021.
'We successfully established price increases that go into effect during the third quarter and provide an offset to the rising input and freight costs in the business,' said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner.
