ALABAMA's Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) recent marked the first cargo flight from Stuttgart, Germany, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
This comes after Swiss forwarding giant Kuehne+Nagel and Birmingham Airport Authority announced their partnership in February 2023 to expand air cargo business in the Southeastern Corridor of the US.
Kuehne+Nagel will now conduct two weekly flights transporting international cargo from Stuttgart, Germany, to Birmingham, Alabama.
The Boeing 747-8 freighter aircraft, which can carry 16 per cent more cargo than its predecessor, will be used for these flights and has a maximum take-off weight of 950 lbs greater.
This weekly flight will benefit industries such as automotive, aviation, and pharmaceuticals that require faster recovery times than major hubs experiencing congestion due to heavy activity.
'As the number-one air freight forwarder worldwide, we are always looking for ways to contribute to the business success of our customers who trust us to manage their logistics,' said Kuehne+Nagel vice president Greg Martin.
'Our vision is to make Birmingham into a long-term gateway to and from the Southeastern Corridor of the US, and we're pleased to be able to provide customers with alternative options that support their supply chain needs,' he said.
