THE Navayuga Container Terminal (NCT) at the Indian port of Krishnapatnam handled a record 500,000 TEU during its 2018/19 financial year ending March. The landmark container was loaded on to the SSL Kutch.
The container terminal has experienced rapid growth since commencing operations in 2013, handling 58,000 TEU in its first full year of operation.
Krishnapatnam port's chief executive Anil Yendluri was quoted as saying in a report by The Maritime Standard: 'NCT has taken giant strides in getting established as a transshipment hub on the east coast of India and we are working towards making it the main hub port in the Bay of Bengal.'
Further investment is currently underway to expand the terminal's capacity to two million TEU annually by the end of this year, up from 1.2 million TEU at present to keep up with demand.
This follows on from the recent delivery of five new electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs), an expansion in yard capacity to 5,000 slots and the addition of reefer container points to service an extra 200 units.
