The Turkish Coaster Owners and Operators Association (KOSDER) has officially become a member of the Baltic and International maritime Council (BIMCO), recognized as one of the largest and most influential maritime organizations in the world. This milestone was finalized in February 2025 after intensive negotiations between the two parties, culminating in the delivery of a membership certificate from BIMCO to KOSDER. By joining BIMCO, Kosder aims to fortify its position in global shipping and further elevate the prominence of Turkish maritime operations.BIMCO is widely acknowledged for its expertise in formulating international shipping regulations, standard agreements, document drafting, and legal frameworks that shape the maritime industry. With KOSDER now holding a place within the BIMCO Documentary Committee, the association will have a direct hand in developing and updating key contracts, clauses, and other legal documents that govern global maritime activity. Such involvement signifies a noteworthy step forward not only for KOSDER’s members but also for Turkey’s broader maritime sector. The prospect of KOSDER’s membership was first floated in October 2024 during the Shipping Route İstanbul (SHIPROUTE-24) conference, a pivotal event hosted in Istanbul. BIMCO President Nikolaus H. Schües and Head of Membership & Business Development Erik Jensby were among the attendees, opening the door for preliminary talks with KOSDER representatives. Following these initial discussions, both parties maintained close communication to evaluate mutual interests and potential collaborative projects, eventually agreeing on KOSDER’s inclusion under the BIMCO umbrella.BIMCO offers a valuable platform where its members can address emerging challenges within the maritime sector, aligning on global policy initiatives and technological advances. By joining this influential network, KOSDER and its membership will be better positioned to shape and respond to critical developments in areas such as environmental regulations, digitalization, and safety standards. This collaborative environment also paves the way for strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange, ultimately fortifying the international standing of Turkish shipowners and operators.KOSDER leaders assert that membership in BIMCO marks a significant milestone in the organization’s ongoing efforts to expand its international network and contribute to global maritime governance. Plans are already underway to deepen the partnership through joint events, training programs, and project-based collaborations. By combining BIMCO’s worldwide expertise with KOSDER’s regional insights, the partnership promises to drive innovation and progress in shipping practices, benefiting stakeholders both regionally and across the global maritime landscape.
