KENYA Airways is set to enhance its cargo capacity by incorporating two Boeing 737-800 converted freighters as part of its expansion strategy, reports London's Air Cargo News.
The national carrier emphasises that these freighters play a pivotal role in its 'diversification strategy' and aims to meet the region's rising demand for cargo transport.
Presently, kenya Airways operates a duo of older 737-300 freighters. The announcement of the initiation of 737-800F operations was made during a logistics event in Nairobi, with plans for the second aircraft to commence service in February of the following year.
'With the addition of this [new] freighter, Kenya Airways will now offer increased cargo capacity to existing routes as well as new cargo destinations,' said CEO Allan Kilavuka.
Mr Kilavuka stated there is a need for African entities to invest in sustainable freight operations, including air cargo, to advance socio-economic development.
Mr Kilavuka stated that the carrier will use the 737s on routes to Dubai World Central-the location of the city's Al Maktoum airport-as well as Sharjah, plus the Saudi Arabian cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.
