KALMAR, part of Cargotec, has won a contract to heighten and extend eight ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at MSC's terminal in Valencia to handle expected 19,000-TEU ships.
All cranes are due to be operational by mid-2017. Today MSC Terminal VLC cranes can handle 16,000 TEUers.
Head of crane upgrades for Kalmar's south EMEA region, Jose Ignacio Fernandez, said this is the company's biggest contract to date for STS crane upgrades in this part of the world.
"Upgrading an existing crane's handling capabilities provides a cost-effective solution for ports and terminals looking to quickly gear up for the continued increases in vessel size," he said.
The terminal in Valencia is a transshipment hub and distribution gateway for the Iberian Peninsula and southern Europe that currently handles 1.6 million TEU annually.
