SWISS forwarding giant Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) has developed a new key performance indicator (KPI) which underscores today's state of massive container congestion, reports Singapore's Splash 247.
'With the indicator, we have implemented a new level of data analytics for sea logistics,' said K+N management board member Otto Schacht.
Kuehne+Nagel digital platform Seaexplorer has developed its Global Disruption Indicator, which tallies the cumulative container waiting time in days based on vessel capacity in disrupted hot spots.
The specific hot spots covered include Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle, Vancouver, Prince Rupert, Oakland, New York, Savannah, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Rotterdam and Antwerp.
This TEU waiting days (TWD) indicator works whereby, for example, one vessel with a 10,000 TEU capacity waiting 12 days equals 120,000 TEU waiting days.
As of yesterday the total TEU waiting time at the hot spot port areas covered by Seaexplorer stood at a staggering 11.56m days.
An example demonstrates how the indicator is determined: one vessel with 10,000 TEU capacity waiting 12 days to enter a port equals 120,000 TEU waiting days.
In addition, another vessel with 5,000 TEU waiting 10 days to enter the same port equals 50,000 TEU waiting days. The total TEU waiting time is 170,000 TEU waiting days.
The disruption indicator provides insights as well as advanced analytics and trends on the current situation impacting global trade. Currently, the indicator reflects a waiting time and scale of 11.6 million TEU days - a persistently high level.
