BRAZIL's Port of Santos has seen continuous growth in container movement in the double digits, reaching 3.6 million TEU in September, 19.6 per cent above the 3 million TEU in the same period of 2020, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.
This performance occured despite the lack of containers affecting the international market continues, caused by the strong demand registered in the main exporting ports of the United States, Asia, and Europe.
The port has also seen volume growth in fertilisers, increasing 28.6 per cent so far this year to 5.8 million tonnes.
The General Director of the Santos Port Authority (SPA), Fernando Biral, highlighted the importance of implementing, in the Outeirinhos region, the new STS 53 terminal, which is dedicated to the handling and storage of bulk solid minerals - especially fertilisers and sulphates - and a rail loop that will allow transporting this return cargo by rail to face the growth trajectory presented, in line with the increase in container handling.
'Santos Port Authority and the Ministry of Infrastructure are preparing what will be the largest auction ever held at the Port of Santos, STS 10, in Saboo, which will involve preliminary investments estimated at US$390 million (BRL2.2 billion) and capacity for 2.5 million TEU,' said Fernando Biral, SPA's general director.
'The Port Authority has focused its actions not only on the implementation of new infrastructure, but also on the implementation of technological innovations, in search of shared solutions for operational activities at the Port of Santos,' said Marcelo Robeiro, SPA director of operations.
