JAMAICA's parliamentary opposition is warning that Jamaica's aviation rating is at risk following the temporary closure of the Sangster International Airport in St James, reports Radio Jamaica.
Hundreds of travellers were left stranded after the authorities were forced to close the airport due to damage to the runway.
Full operation resumed following repairs. Shadow Minister of Transport Mikael Phillips, expressing concern over the recent closure of the main runway at Sangster International, noted that this is the second airport closure this year due to safety reasons.
'The runway failure raises questions of the MBJ, management of MBJ, Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority and the Airports Authority of Jamaica.'
A failure of runway landing lights earlier this year led to the temporary closure of Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.
The opposition spokesman expressed hope that other similar issues would not recur, warning that this could undermine Jamaica's international ratings in air safety and air travel.
