ISLAMIC Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) has clinched 14th place in Alphaliner's list of the world's top 100 shipping lines as determined by their fleet size and global container shipping capacity. Last year, IRISL was ranked 19th.
IRISL's capacity now takes up 0.7 per cent of the world's shipping lines, up 0.3 per cent from the last year, reported Teharan Times.
The IRISL Group owns 50 vessels with a total capacity of 154,415 TEU, of which 46 are owned by the carrier and four are leased.
Denmark's Maersk is ranked first in the list of the world's top 100 container/liner operators with 716 vessels and a total capacity of 4,146,098 TEU. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is in second place since it owns 536 ships with a total capacity of 3,402,000 TEU.
With 474 vessels and a combined capacity of 2,895,058 TEU, the Chinese state-owned China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco) is the third largest shipping company worldwide, followed by France's CMA CGM in fourth position with 521 ships and a capacity of 2,689,265 TEU.
