India Aims to Lead the World in maritime Sector by 2047
India is set to become a global
leader in the maritime sector, with plans to significantly increase port cargo handling capacity and develop a strong ecosystem for shipbuilding and repairs. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, shared this vision during the silver jubilee celebrations of the Kamarajar Port Trust in Chennai.
India's Vision for Maritime Leadership
The Minister emphasized that by 2047,
india aims to rank among the top ten maritime nations globally. To achieve this, the government is focused on modernizing ports, improving efficiency, and creating world-class infrastructure for the maritime sector. Shri Sonowal highlighted that India's advancements in maritime operations will not only boost the nation's economy but also strengthen its position in global trade.
Enhancing Kamarajar Port’s Role
Kamarajar Port, located near Chennai, plays a crucial role in reducing congestion at Chennai Port. It has become a hub for efficient coal handling and has significant potential for future expansion. The Minister announced the construction of a new
IOCL Jetty with a capacity of 3 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum), which will further enhance the port's capacity to manage cargo and facilitate industrial growth in the region.
Supporting Coastal Communities with Desalination
A key highlight of the celebrations was the announcement of a
1 MLD (Million Litres Per Day) Seawater Desalination Plant. This plant, built at a cost of
₹32 crores, will provide clean drinking water not only for the port's operations but also for the surrounding coastal communities. This initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to integrating community welfare into port development projects.
Focus on Infrastructure and Quality
The Minister pointed out that the timely execution of key infrastructure projects by the Shipping Ministry has been instrumental in the success of flagship programs. Quality is a top priority, ensuring that all development projects meet high standards and contribute to the long-term goals of the maritime sector.
New Developments at Kamarajar Port
During the event, Shri Sonowal laid the foundation stone for several new projects at Kamarajar Port, including:
- Capital Dredging Projects: These will enable larger ships to dock at the port, increasing its capacity to handle international trade.
- Integrated Command and Control Centre: This state-of-the-art facility, being built at a cost of ₹545 crores, will enhance operational efficiency and improve safety measures at the port.
