The deceased was Mr. Yoshihiro Osuga (69), a pilot in Yokohama City.
A pilot is an indispensable presence when entering a port, as he uses a rope ladder to board ships entering the port and guides them through the waterway.
Around 5:30 a.m. on the 5th, Mr. Osuka fell into the sea about 4 kilometers northwest of Iojima Manahana in Nagasaki City when he was boarding a cruise ship called Diamond Princess, which was entering Nagasaki.
Osuka was rescued by the Diamond Princess lifeboat, but was pronounced dead about two hours later.
The late 69-year-old Osuka had more than 15 years of experience as a pilot.
Also, the sea was calm at the time of the accident.
The Coast Guard is investigating the situation at the time and the cause of the accident in detail.
