THE Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship terminal of International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI), recently achieved a milestone by handling its 50 millionth TEU.
The milestone was reached after the terminal unloaded the 50 millionth TEU from the MV Seabreeze, operated by Ocean Network Express (ONE), reports Manila Bulletin.
This significant cargo, owned by HRD Singapore PTE Ltd, was unloaded at MICT, witnessed by ictsi Executive VP Christian Gonzales and ONE Philippines' Jose Juan Lacson.
MICT has been a leader in the Philippine port industry since it commenced operations at the Port of Manila in 1988 under ICTSI's 25-plus 25-year concession contract.
To enhance its services and expand capacity, ICTSI announced last May its plans to construct an additional berth at MICT.
The new berth will enable MICT to accommodate foreign ultra-container vessels of up to 18,000 TEU, adding 400 metres of quay and 12 hectares of yard space, thus increasing annual capacity by an additional 200,000 TEU.
