HONG Kong International Airport's (HKIA) third and newest runway was shut down for eight hours, delaying 450 flights, on Monday after a cargo plane operated by Atlas Air burst a tyre during an emergency landing.
Only two runways were operating on that day with the other runway closed for modification works in 2022 and will reopen later this year.
The hkia authority had informed Atlas Air to submit a report to it and the Civil Aviation Department as required under regulations, reports Hong Kong's South China Morning Post.
The airport authority said 932 flights were handled between 7am, when the emergency occurred, and midnight.
The closure has prompted calls for the Airport Authority to review its contingency plans.
However, experts said that the time taken for the affected runway to resume operations was reasonable.
