THE Port of Hamburg has set new records in the first nine months of 2014 in almost all segments of cargo, which posted an overall increase of 5.7 per cent year on year for a total throughput of 110 million tonnes.
Hamburg posted a 6.4 per cent year-on-year increase in container throughput to a record 7.4 million TEU in the first nine months, according to port authority figures.
This growth compared with the 1.9 per cent average increase in total throughput for the entire northern range of European ports, a rate of growth that enlarged Hamburg's market share of container traffic from 26.1 to 26.7 per cent.
With 12.8 per cent container volume growth from China, Hamburg's biggest box trading partner, statistics revealed that the port handled 2.3 million TEU from China in the first nine months.
Meanwhile, Hamburg achieved a 15.4 per cent advance to 176,000 TEU with India. Malaysia trade grew 10.2 per cent to 203,000 TEU and Africa was up 28.2 per cent.
In the first nine months, 1.8 million TEU were moved by feeders in the Baltic trade, representing a 2.8 per cent increase. Feederships carried 300,000 TEU, up 29.2 per cent to Polish ports.
"The unwavering strong growth of feeder services between Hamburg and Polish ports clearly indicates that along with Hamburg's well developed rail and road transport services, seaborne container transport is gaining importance," said Ingo Egloff, an executive member of Port of Hamburg Marketing.
During the first nine months, container traffic between Hamburg and Russian ports reached 504,000 TEU, that is 5.7 per cent below the comparable figure in 2013.
"After China, Russia still occupies second place among the Port of Hamburg's container partners," said Mr Egloff.
Between January and September, 374 ships of more than 10,000 TEU docked at Hamburg, 23.8 per cent more than in the same period the year before.
This fact for calls for dredging and widening of the navigation channel on the Lower and Outer Elbe, Mr Egloff said.
