THE Port of Hamburg's first half container volume 7.5 per cent year on year to 4.7 million TEU, the port authority announced.
Seaborne cargo throughput at Germany's largest port rose 4.1 per cent in the first half to 69.4 million tons, but bulk cargo slipped 0.3 per cent to 21 million tons.
The increase in containers was attributable to the four new liner services that have linked the Hanseatic City with ports in the US, Canada and Mexico, said the release.
The 283,000 TEU handled in Hamburg on container services with the US since the beginning of the year took the United States into second place among Hamburg's most important partners for container services.
'A total of 11 new liner services in the 2019 first half make it obvious that the Port of Hamburg has gained in attractiveness for shipping and shippers,' said Axel Mattern, joint CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.
Containerships calling Hamburg also increased 3.7 per cent to 3,04. Among these were 89 ultra-large container carriers or 36.9 per cent more, with a slot capacity of 18,000 TEU and over.
The first half proved extremely successful for the Port of Hamburg's transshipment and hinterland services.
'For the first half of 2019, the Port Railway reported increases cross the board,' said Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority (HPA).
'Also apparent, moreover, is the extreme efficiency of the Port Railway: Compared to last year's first half, the number of trains was up by 3.6 per cent, and of standard containers up by no less than 12 per cent,' he said.
